The bow grip

For this video lesson, you’ll need a stick and your bow. You should constantly check the grip. Common grip mistakes are:

  • Tensing the hand
  • Holding the bow by the edge of the stick
  • Straightening the fingers
  • Not putting bow fingers over the frog

Here are the roles of each finger:

  • Thumb: supports the bow, provides fulcrum
  • Middle finger: closes the ring with the thumb to secure fulcrum
  • Index finger: presses the bow down and controls sounding point
  • Ring finger: controls Contact Point, or straightness of bow
  • Little finger: lifts bow pressure
